Hello Everyone! I know it has been a while (read: almost a year!) since the last blog post went live. So much has happened since then, both good and bad, as life usually goes. Some things I’ll get into in new posts I have planned, and other things will have to wait a bit before I am able to share them with you.

Since it has been so long since you’ve seen something new here, I thought I would come back with a short random list of 10 things to know about me as a renewed introduction of sorts.

Some of them are more serious than others, but there will be some posts topics I would like to share in the future that are more serious, as well. I want to share many facets of life with you and thought this would be a good place to start.

You can read my original welcome here.

Let’s get reacquainted!

1. I am Kind of a Nerd

Liking things that are assumed as nerdy was something I was definitely embarrassed by growing up. Those things I kept hidden from everyone except my family and closest friends at the time, lest I give bullies one more thing to use against me.

It wasn’t until I gained more confidence as I got older that I felt secure enough to say, ‘I like this, and I don’t care if you think that makes me weird!’ I no longer feel ashamed for liking the things that make me happy, and neither should you!

It also helps a ton to have a fiancé who is also a big nerd, too. In fact, I’d say he made me even more of a nerd! I got on a 5AM flight so I could go to NYC Comic Con with him! That was also the same weekend we first said I love you to each other. Ahh, nerd love lol

A few of my nerdy loves include Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars, superheroes (doesn’t have to be strictly DC or Marvel), fantasy and magic like Merlin and The Witcher, and I often enjoy watching A play video games with excellent plots, like the newer God of War. The graphics are just spectacular! So excited for Ragnarök to come out!

Did I mention I love reading? Anything but straight horror is alright with me.

2. I Love a Good Love Story

Or, as A says all cutesy ‘the wuv story’. I am a sucker for a good romance. If you’ve got one in your book or movie, you will automatically get at least one star from me. All of my favorites involve a love story, mostly with a happy ending.

I’ve been in love with love stories probably since I heard my first one. Like many, I grew up watching the Disney movies and reading about happily ever afters. I cry when I watch proposal videos and attend weddings. I just love, love!

My heart swells at the thought of pure true love. Getting older it seemed completely unattainable, but I held out hope and faith for such a thing and was overwhelmed when I realized I had found it for myself. Never settle and never give up, its true that you never know when you will find it.

3. I Have Only Been with One Man

Which transitions nicely to this next point. No, that isn’t a specification between a boy vs. a man. I had one boyfriend in high school who lasted all of 4 months, went on a few dates in college, but never found someone who I really wanted to be in a relationship with.

Sure, I had my share of kisses and tears, but that’s all that ever seemed to happen, nothing ever went anywhere. Until I met A, we had no clue of course how things were going to turn out when we started. As cliché as it is to say, he was just different, different than any guy I had ever interacted with.

I knew he was different because of the way he acted toward me. It is very true that actions speak louder than words. He made me feel special from the beginning and he has never stopped since. I think that’s what real romance is, always trying to make each other person feel special.

4. My Mom Thought I Was Going to be a Boy!

My parents decided that they did not want to know my gender before I was born. During her pregnancy with me, my mom was CONVINCED I was a little baby boy growing in her belly. This conviction set the stage for both my birthdate and my name.

She went into labor the morning of February 13th, and still convinced I was a boy, she desperately wanted to get me out before February 14th, also known as Valentine’s Day. While I am sure there is plenty a man born on this holiday of love, she did not want her son to be. Of course, you don’t get an exact say in this kind of thing, but luckily for her I did arrive before the end of the day.

Since she went around telling her siblings I was going to be a boy during her pregnancy, this led to some usual teasing over what my name would be. Well, when one of her brothers walked in the room after my birth asking how ‘Caleb’ was (his guess of the day) it got them thinking about what the girl equivalent is, having not yet decided on my name. The baby book they looked it up in had my unique spelling of Kaela, a combination of Kay and Ella, and thus I was finally given a name.

5. I Do Not Have a Relationship with My Mom

I know this can be controversial to some people, how can you not have a relationship with the woman who gave birth to you? To those who would hold that kind of judgment against me, all I can say is that not every woman is fit to be a good mother. Please, feel blessed to have one you can be close with. I know I am not alone in this.

Other than to say it has been more than a decade since I have had any real contact with her, I am not going to dive into the life-long backstory in this post, that will have to be for another time. I felt it was important to state it up front as I plan on doing some follow up posts that would reference this loss of relationship.

Some of those will feature the wonderful women who helped fill that gap throughout my life, including my grandmother, stepmother, aunts, nanny, future mother in-law, and even some of my friends’ mothers. I am grateful for all of them and all of the love and guidance they have given me over the years, as well as, the close relationship I have with my dad.

6. My Lifelong Love Affair with Dresses

For as long as I can remember, I have been in love with gorgeous gowns, beautiful brides, fairy-tale dresses, all of it. I wasn’t so much obsessed with being a princess as I was with wanting a princess wardrobe. Same for Barbie, the Fashion Polly Dolls, and American Girl dolls.

I could not get enough of their pretty dresses!

I’ll take any opportunity to buy a new dress and get all dolled up. I’ve got hundreds of dresses saved on Pinterest boards as homage and inspiration. It’s the whole reason I went into fashion in the first place, and I felt so blessed when my first job was working in the little niche of bridal and evening wear.

I love the fabrics and detail you see in evening wear that you don’t really see used in any ready-to-wear, which I get, it’s not practical or economical. The craftsmanship and hours of love and labor that go into the haute couture designs just blows me away. It is art that can be worn!

7. I Have to Look Up Actors

This one is a little weird, I know. If I hear the voice in an animation or see the actor on screen but cannot for the life of me remember where I know them from, I HAVE to look up their filmography to place where I know them.

Now, if I’m seeing a movie at a theater or over at a friend’s house for a move night, I can restrain myself from doing this while the film is running. At home though I have far less will power. Much to A’s frustration.

If you asked him what his biggest pet peeve is about me, I would wager a guess this is it. I do try to resist the nagging urge and wait till the end because I know how much it bothers him if I pull out my phone while we are watching something new. Sometimes he’ll even look it up because he knows how much it is nagging at me to have to know.

8. I Hate Pork

*Gasp* I know, take moment for the shock to wear off, I promise it will be okay.

Most people are absolutely flabbergasted when I say this, especially when it is in reference to bacon. I hate it though; I hate the taste, I hate the smell, nothing about it is in anyway shape or form appealing to me.

I have never liked it and I don’t think I ever will. I won’t say never because I know pregnancy can do some strange things to a woman. If I never do eat it though, that just leaves more for those of you who do like it.

9. Sweet Tooth

On the flip side, I am such a sweet-oholic! While it has tapered off from childhood a bit, when I could down a bottle of chocolate syrup if allowed, I still love sweets.

Chocolate is my favorite, especially dark chocolate.

Kind of like dresses, I also love to see what master bakers are capable of doing to desserts. Some creations are jaw-dropping. Those are the only competitions I like watching on the food network, and of course love Great British Baking Show on Netflix.

I’m not super skilled myself, but really enjoy trying new recipes and decorating styles. My top registry item is a Kitchenaid Mixer!

10. I Love Learning

This is one of the main reasons I wanted to start a blog in the first place. I know not everyone shares my love of learning, or even holds the same interest in things that I like learning about, as vast as they are.

I want this to be a place that is not only fun and inspirational, but that can be used as a resource for people to be able to come back to whenever they need.

From random history tidbits to helpful how-to’s! There is just so much to learn about!

I’ve got some topics picked out that I feel I can share good content with all of you, but if there is something else you want to learn about or see me cover that you are interested in knowing more about, please feel free to reach out at any time! I’ll get lost down the rabbit-hole of research for you!

I’m a big believer in sharing the wealth that is knowledge.
